People of NIU – Tom

Tom Cortesi, a junior in Electrical Engineering from Mount Prospect, Illinois holds up a ball that’s used to play the game Spikeball. Cortesi was a student at Mount Prospect High School when the CEO of Spikeball first marketed the game to the students. Cortesi bought one of the first sets and began to play with his friends. They continued playing regularly, improving their game and developing plays. “I love the defensive aspect of it,” Cortesi said. “I like that type of game where you have to give everything and use your body.” Now he runs a club at home in Mount Prospect that “travels the nation, trains together, and tries to be the best.” He hopes to get Spikeball on to the NIU next and has been playing out on campus to help boost interest. “It grows fast,” Cortesi said. “People come up when they see us playing it. It sells itself.”
