People of NIU – Charlie

Charlie Duval, a junior Geology major from Stewart, Illinois holds up a keychain made from a geode. Duval said about choosing his major, “I picked up rocks when I was younger and I’ve been picking them up ever since.” The study of rocks has made him develop an appreciation of what has happened in the past. Another thrill that is common among the geologist crowd? “It’s fun to break them,” Duval shares. This way you can view all the layers and really study them. Duval has a favorite rock, the Pegmatite. “The crystals grow quickly in a mass,” said Duval. “You end up with a variety.”
